On Apologies

The 4 y.o.: Mom, big C told a lie. She said the heating pad was in the kitchen.
The 12 y.o.: It’s right here.
The 4 y.o.: Oh.
The Mom: I think you need to say sorry to your big sis?
The 4 y.o. (looking at her feet, v. quietly): Uh, sorry.
The Mom: Look her in the eye and say you’re sorry like you mean it.
The 4 y.o.. (looking at her sister’s chest): SORRY!
The Mom: Try again. Look her in the eye and apologize sweetly.
The 4 y.o. (trying harder): I’m s-sorry.
The Mom: Ok, thank you sweetie. (To the 12 y.o.) And can you forgive her?
The 4 y.o.: No! I will never forgive her! NOT EVER!!!!
