On Groundhog Day

The 12 y.o.: So the Groundhog…I think his name is Pete?
The Mom: Phil.
The 12 y.o.: Ok Phil. And what was up with the Abe Lincoln costume?
The Mom: On the groundhog?
The 12 y.o.: No, the announcer he hangs out with. He was all dressed up in black with a top hat. I mean who wears that these days? How do we know if the groundhog saw his own shadow?
The Mom: I think the point is that it is whether we see its shadow or not.
The 12 y.o.: Oh, and another thing – what happens if the groundhog dies? It’s a long winter – you never know what goes on down there. I wonder if they would hold auditions? And who’s in charge of picking the next groundhog? The President?
