Field Notes from The Motherhood

On Watching Superbowl LI

The Grandma: How old is Tom Brady?

The 18 yo: What? How should I know? I don’t even like football.

The Grandma: I was looking at your father.

The Dad: Why would I know? I’m English. Football means something completely different to me.

The Grandma: Doesn’t anyone know how old Tom Brady is?

The Mom: 39. He’s 39 years old. They said he graduated from the University of Michigan in 1999. Assume he was 22 so he’s 39. Well, 40 this year, I guess since that would make him born in 1977.

The Grandma: Wow. How did you know that?

The Mom: I mathed. Why do you want to know anyway?

The Grandma: I predict that in 10 years Tom Brady is going to be President of the United States.

The 18 yo:

The Dad:

The Mom:

The 10 yo: You mean 12 years, right Grandma? Presidents have a 4-year term in office and this was a new president year. Why do you think Tim Brady is going to be president anyway?

The Grandma: Look at him. Everyone loves him. He plays football. And he’s handsome.

The 10 y.o.: What a cool Pokemon shirt!

The Mom: Too bad it’s in the Men’s section. Guys always get the coolest things…

The 10 y.o.: Like Happy Meal prizes. The girl ones were always a stupid pink plastic pony or the princess no one has ever heard of. When I had short hair, sometimes they’d give me the boy Happy Meal prize instead and they were amazing! They got cool things like.. grappling hooks and spy kits!

American History Lesson from Hamilton the Musical

I love this kid  ❤️

Plus she got every question correct *just* from her knowledge of the lyrics, for example:

  1. Where did Thomas Jefferson live? Monticello. In Virginia.
  2. Who was the English Monarch addressed in the Declaration of Independence? King George III
  3. Name 3 soldiers who fought in the Continental Army. Alexander Hamilton, Marquis de Lafayette and…oh yeah, George Washington.
  4. What was the final battle of the Revolutionary War? Yorktown.
  5. BONUS: After the Americans won at Yorktown, everyone was singing the drinking song :”The World Turned Upside Down”.

On Artificial Intelligence

17 y.o: “Wednesdays are cancelled due to scheduling error.” It’s a quote from Nightvale.

The Mom: Ok, I’ll bite…what exactly is Nightvale?

17 y.o: You’ve never heard of Nightvale?  It’s got a HUGE fandom. I quote it all the time.

The Mom: I’ve heard of ‘Nightvale‘, I just didn’t know what kind of media it was. A movie, tv series, web site or what…

The 17 y.o: How can you not know what it was if you’ve heard of it?

The Mom: Because I see the word a lot online. It’s like VR or AI. Here, I’ll use it in a sentence: AI has been around for ages and it will affect us way into the future. Do you know what AI is?

The 17 y.o: A steak sauce?
